Understanding Hormonal Imbalance: When Your Period Isn’t “Just a Period”

If you’re a woman experiencing irregular, painful, or unpredictable menstrual cycles, you may have been told it’s “normal” or “just part of being a woman.” But persistent symptoms like mood swings, fatigue, intense cramps, or missed periods are not something you just have to live with. At Revitalize Health and Wellness, we believe every woman deserves to understand her body and be taken seriously when things feel off.

Let’s talk about what’s normal, what’s not, and when to seek support.

First, What Does a Normal Menstrual Cycle Look Like?

A normal menstrual cycle for a healthy, non-pregnant, non-breastfeeding adult woman lasts between 21 to 35 days, with menstrual bleeding lasting 2 to 7 days. Hormonal shifts throughout the month regulate ovulation, energy, mood, and even sleep.

It’s normal to feel some physical changes like bloating or mild cramps but your period shouldn’t interfere significantly with daily life. If your symptoms are severe, disruptive, or constantly changing, it may be time to look deeper.

Hormonal Imbalance vs. Endocrine Disorders

Hormonal imbalances can happen due to stress, diet, sleep disruption, or aging. Many women experience subtle shifts in hormones that lead to weight gain, mood changes, fatigue, low libido, or irregular periods.

But in some cases, symptoms point to more complex endocrine disorders, including:

  • PMS (Premenstrual Syndrome): Mood swings, irritability, and physical symptoms like bloating before your period.

  • PMDD (Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder): A more severe form of PMS that can significantly impact mental health.

  • PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome): A condition involving excess androgens, irregular periods, acne, and difficulty with weight or fertility.

  • Endometriosis: Painful periods caused by uterine-like tissue growing outside the uterus.

These conditions often overlap and can be misdiagnosed or dismissed entirely.

What about Perimenopause and Menopause?

If you are in your late 30’s to early 40’s and are starting to experience hormonal changes, it may not be “hormonal issue” or “imbalance”. Perimenopause starts roughly ten years before menopause (when menstruation stops).  Perimenopause can look different for everyone, but many women mistake it for bad periods in their late 30’s or early 40’s when in reality, it’s more than that.
